Man Wrongfully Arrested Due to Artificial Intelligence in Lee County

Artificial intelligence has the power to transform many aspects of our lives – including criminal justice. AI companies are already creating advanced video software that can capture license plates or recognize facial features. But what happens when this technology doesn’t work properly? A recent wrongful arrest in Lee County raises serious questions about the use of AI in criminal justice.

Lee County Arrested for a Crime He Never Committed Thanks to AI

In February of 2025, various sources reported that a man in Lee County had been arrested for a crime committed hundreds of miles away – a crime he never actually committed. So how was a mistake like this even possible? The answer lies with new, AI-powered software that analyzed surveillance photos of a different man at a fast food restaurant. This individual had attempted to lure a young girl.

Using facial recognition software, local police in northeast Florida analyzed the photos and matched them with a man in Lee County. This man works as a commercial crabber, and he has had a few brushes with the law. These include a DUI and a physical altercation at a bar – but he never attempted to lure any minors – and he has never even been to the fast food restaurant where the offense occurred.

Eventually, police appeared at the man’s door to serve an out-of-county warrant. The dumbfounded man demanded an explanation, but deputies said they didn’t even know anything about the alleged offense. The man was then placed in handcuffs and transported to the local jail.

The photograph raised even more questions, as the man pointed out that he has completely different hair compared to the suspect. He also claims that the suspect has a distinctive mark underneath his eye, one that he lacks. Based on these inconsistencies, the victim of this wrongful arrest claims that the software is 100% inaccurate.

Due to these issues, the state attorney decided to drop all charges against the defendant. However, the man’s defense attorney is still demanding answers. If AI software is capable of making a mistake this egregious, one has to wonder how many other people have been wrongfully arrested.

An internal report concluded that the local police relied too heavily on the AI facial recognition software, and that they neglected to carry out basic steps like running license plate numbers or checking phone records. This shows how AI software can be a harmful crutch for law enforcement officers – replacing more reliable investigatory techniques.
